Opening Day is here, and the Boston Red Sox will meet the Seattle Mariners in their season opener on Thursday night, but Craig Berslow is still making moves. First, they traded for Naoyuki Uwasawa from Tampa Bay on Wednesday. On Thursday, the Red Sox traded rookie infielder Christian Koss.
Koss, who hit.237/.285/.351/.636 for Worcester in AAA last year, was dealt to the San Francisco Giants. The 26-year-old had six at-bats in 2024 spring training, recording three hits.
Koss was a locker-room favorite in Worcester last season, but he hasn’t proven enough to justify a spot on the roster moving forward. Boston’s farm system has a lot of depth, which forces certain prospects off the roster.
In December 2020, the Red Sox acquired the shortstop from Colorado in exchange for pitcher Yoan Aybar. He was a 12th-round pick in 2019 out of UC Irvine. He was regarded as a promising defensive prospect when he was first acquired, but his hitting never quite worked out.
The return for Koss has not yet been announced, although it is expected to be in cash. This move followed the discharge of minor league catcher Stephen Scott and right-handed pitcher Franklin German. It’s unclear what the future holds for these prospects.
