The Broncos appear to be embarking on a rebuild, with key needs remaining to be addressed.
The 2024 NFL Draft will help cover some of those gaps, but Denver might patch up one spot with a productive veteran on Monday.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Broncos plan to sign free-agent cornerback Levi Wallace to a one-year contract if his visit goes well. He allegedly had “plenty of options” but choose to play for defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.
Wallace has played for the Steelers (2022-23) and Buffalo Bills (2018-21) since being an undrafted rookie out of Alabama in 2018. Over his six-year NFL career, he has 306 tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, 12 interceptions, and 54 passes defensed.
The 28-year-old would cover a significant gap in Denver’s defence. Aside from two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Surtain II, the club was very thin at the position. Wallace is now preparing to face Surtain II in 2024.
The Broncos could still add to the roster at the NFL Draft, which takes place April 25-27, but Wallace’s arrival would make that unnecessary.
It’s no secret that Denver still needs a quarterback, with Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci presently leading the pack. So, the likely Wallace signing may indicate that the organisation is preparing to trade up for one of the draft’s top prospects.
If this is the case, it will be costly for the Broncos, as numerous other quarterback-needy clubs are eager to do the same. However, if head coach Sean Payton has his sights set on a particular player, don’t be surprised if he makes a bold move to acquire him.
Denver now has the No. 12 overall pick, but thanks to Wallace, the team will likely have a lot more options with its first pick on Thursday night.
