For what reason did Tiger Woods decline to lead the US Ryder Cup squad in 2025?
The entire golf world was taken aback when Keegan Bradley was revealed as the captain of the US Ryder Cup squad for 2025. With the event returning to New York, it was widely expected that Tiger Woods would be the choice. However, it has emerged via fresh claims that Tiger declined the offer.
Perhaps you’re asking yourself why he would ever do that. Given that the Ryder Cup is one of the most renowned events in history, Tiger would naturally want it to be a part of his legacy at Bethpage Black in New York.
Fortunately, Tiger Woods has previously said why he declined the Ryder Cup captaincy, so we don’t need to make any assumptions.
Tiger Woods explains his decision to decline the US Ryder Cup captaincy in 2025.
I believed that I would not be able to devote the necessary time to Team USA and the players as a captain because of my new duties to the Tour and the associated time demands. That does not imply that I would never wish to be a team captain again. I will throw my hat in the ring for this committee to determine when I feel it is appropriate.
Tiger Woods provides PGA a statement on declining Ryder Cup captaincy:
“With my new responsibilities to the Tour and time commitments involved, I felt like I would not be able to commit the time to Team USA and the players required as a captain…

The answer from Tigers above is as clear-cut as it gets. In essence, Tiger believes he is now too busy to commit the time he believes is required to captain the Ryder Cup team. And I applaud him for declining the offer if that’s his real motivation.
Although I agree with what Tiger stated above, I also believe there was much more thinking into his choice to decline the offer than what he disclosed.
Additional explanations for Tiger Woods’ refusal to skipper the Ryder Cup
Tiger aspires to be the captain of a team.
Tiger wants to be a player captain, which is another reason I believe he declined the captaincy. When Tiger was undoubtedly the team’s top player in 2019, he performed this for the Presidents Cup. When he captains the US Ryder Cup squad, I assume he wants to play as well.
There is one issue, though: Tiger is aware that his current level of play is insufficient. Thus, I think he wants to hold off on being captain and player until he feels his game is strong enough.
Take the lead when America ultimately triumphs in Europe once more.
Awaiting one of the most outrageous statistics you’ll ever hear? Since 1993, the US has not prevailed in the Ryder Cup in Europe. This indicates that in his career, Tiger has never triumphed over a European team in Europe.
This statistic is a huge discussion point every time the Ryder Cup is held in Europe, and it will undoubtedly come up again when the competition is held there in 2027. Therefore, I believe Tiger wants to hold off until 2027 in order to become the best player of his career and lead the United States to triumph in Europe for the first time in what seems like forever.
The owner of the Ryder Cup course in 2027 and Tiger are personal friends.
And lastly, the golf facility that will host the competition is the reason I believe Tiger will hold off on captaining the US Ryder Cup until 2027. Tiger Woods has a great deal of experience on the Adare Manor Golf Course in Ireland, which will host the 2027 Ryder Cup.
The course is owned by Tiger’s close friend J.P. McManus, and Tiger plays it frequently. It’s safe to say that Tiger is quite informed about the course’s layout given that he plays in the member-member division at this course with McManus the majority of the time.
Although Tiger’s official justifications for being too busy to be captain this year are probably true, including these additional elements could complete the picture.
