“It’s an intriguing pick, but I think Keegan was probably also in disbelief at one point.”
Many were taken aback when the PGA of America revealed who will represent the United States in the Ryder Cup the following year. Rory McIlroy and other members of the European team are included in this.
After leading his side to an incredible upset of the United States the previous year, McIlroy was shocked to learn that Keegan Bradley would be captain the following year.
The four-time major champion added, “I think everyone has been surprised by it.” Luke [Donald, the European captain], with whom we had dinner on Sunday night in London, informed us at that time. Probably disbelief, I suppose. It’s an intriguing choice, but I believe Keegan was also at one point in disbelief.
“This appointment is intriguing. At 34, I believe the youngest skipper since Arnold Palmer was a playing captain. But he is well familiar with Bethpage. He attended the local university. He clearly has a strong enthusiasm for the Ryder Cup. It’s undoubtedly different from what the US has done in recent years, and only time will tell if that’s a good or bad thing.
Perhaps McIlroy is taken aback because, like many others, he assumed that his close friend Tiger Woods would assume the role of team captain, particularly given Woods’ stated desire to hold it. But Woods is too busy to be the Ryder Cup captain right now, at least not with his current schedule.
